Maroubra is in the Federal Electoral District of Kingsford Smith. The Member of Parliament currently representing this district in the House of Representatives is Peter Garrett, Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts. Peter was a former member of the Australian band Midnight Oil and a former president the Australian Conservation Foundation. Kingsford Smith was previously represented by G. Anderson (1949 – 1955) D.J. Curtin (1955 – 1969) Lionel Bowen (1969 – 1990) and Laurie Brereton (1990-2007) It has always been a Labor seat. In the last election Peter Garrett (LAB) received 52.8% of the primary vote. Caroline Beinke (LIB) received 33.9%. Sue Mahoney (GRN) received 10.4%
The New South Wales State Electoral District of Maroubra was created in 1950. Since September 2005, Maroubra has been represented in the Legislative Assembly by Michael Daley. Previously the Maroubra District was represented by RJ Heffron #2 (1950 – 1968), Bill Haig (1968 – 1983) and Bob Carr (1983 – 2005) Both Heffron and Carr served terms as State Premier. Like the Federal District of Kingsford Smith, Maroubra has always been held by the Labor Party. In the last election Michael Daley (LAB) received 52.9% of the primary vote. Robert Belleli (LIB) received 27.7%. Anne Gardiner (GRN) received 11.9%.
The Sands Hotel is located in the South Ward of Randwick City. South Ward includes the southern part of Maroubra and all of Malabar, Matraville, Chifley, Philip Bay, Little Bay, Port Botany and La Perouse.
